PHP first arrived on the web programming scene in 1995 and was originally an acronymn for Personal Home Page. Today PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor and is used on over 240 million websites. The release of PHP as of July 24, 2014, is 5.5.15 and is open-source for all to use for free.

The power of the language is that it provides extended logic to HTML code. Developed organically without the specific intent to create a language, but to assist in creating a tool to enhance a personal resume, PHP was inspired by and is similar to C language and PERL but simpler and easier to use. PHP is an interpreted language and can run on multiple platforms.

WordPress is largely based on PHP.
